LA MICHOACANA

Artwork by DEZALB

Oh, you devious landmark, your beautiful shambles of colors, how you stand so tall even when the things around you are less than beautiful; how I seek a home in you. Because every time I move to a new city, I always find you there. Standing, breathing, providing for all those around you. My mother asks why I am so scared. I tell her it is because I know I will be too far away to live my life in the shades of my culture. I tell her that las Michoacana’s all look alike to me. As to say, they all feel like home. As to say, they all feel like her. So I enter and walk in the footsteps of another, here to buy chiles for dinner. Child in one hand and a bag of meat in the other. I know that no matter where I find myself, I will always find the pathway to my childhood. Where we spent time in this store of colors. And you will never be too far away.
